KIIEMF Meter

KII EMF Meter

The KII EMF meter has gotten some rave reviews in the paranormal investigative community, as well as a number of modifications to make the device purportedly more suited to investigations.

The KII has been claimed spirits can be taught to make changes in the display in accordance with answers, such as yes or no.[1]

Theory of Operation and Use

The purely technical theory of operation is that the device will detect "Safe Levels" of EM fields in the environment, as determined by the Swiss Government[2]

The various theories among paranormal investigators is that a spirit can be conditioned to manipulate the EM field surrounding the device, and cause a change in the reading of the meter.[3]

However, one study conducted by Long Island Paranormal Investigators showed that the theory does not stand up to scrutiny, finding of 41 investigations, only 5 possible occurrences of this phenomena were displayed.

Also, the theory that ghosts or spirits can manipulate EM fields has yet to be substantiated, so it fails to stand up to scrutiny, being based on a unproven premise.

Device Design

The KII meter consist of

the 9 volt battery, a momentary "on" switch, 5 LED lights, a LM324 quad operational amplifier, 7 medium-gain PN100/200 amplifier transistors, 3 diodes, and various resistors/capacitors.[4]

The device lacks any discrete Hall Effect sensor, which is used in any device which would need to detect EM fields, however many sources have discussed a trace on the perimeter of the PCB board is used for a coil type sensor.

Modifications

Several modifications are available for the unit, either available at purchase time, or after-market modifications. One prominent modification is the replacement/supplementing of the momentary button with a toggle switch.[5] One issue cited with the toggle-switch modification, is the effect of making the KII much more susceptible to RF interference[6] due to the switch and it's leads acting as an extended antenna. This can be circumvented, and actually act as a benefit when used in a faraday cage, due to it making the device even more sensitive.

To circumvent issues with the toggle switch, other methods of keeping the unit powered on at all times have been done, such as a "Fish-can clip" or by inserting a coin under the button to hold it in the "on" position.[7]

Issues

It has also been shown that the KII is prone to RF detection, more so than EMF detection,<ref name=EP/> excepting in the case of strong EM fields, which in close proximity would be detected by any EM or RF meter.

Also, the distribution chain has been fraught with issues due to heavy-handed list pricing,[8] as well as other supplier issues after it debuted on the Reality TV show Ghosthunters.

It is also been stated by one supplier as being erratic in it's measurements [9] nearing the point of un-usability. Many of the readings for when a spirit is purported to be communicating is a change in excess of 20mG, which by most investigators, is a reading much to high to be of a paranormal origin.

Also, the self-test routine the unit uses to check the LED's is similar to what the unit would do when purported communication is occurring (One reason for the toggle-switch mod).
